Founded on 20th December 1983, Dubai Duty Free which had US20 million annual sales during its first year of business, celebrated its 36th anniversary in style in 2019.
The airport retailer welcomed passengers travelling through Dubai with a special 25% discount spread over three days on a wide range of merchandise. Total sales for the three days reached Dhs209.48 million (US$57.39 million).
2019 was a remarkable year for Dubai Duty Free when it crossed the US$2 billion milestone on 26th December and achieved total annual sales of Dhs7.406 billion (US$2.029 billion) by year-end, cementing its status as one of the largest travel retail operators in the world in terms of sales turnover.
Now employing almost 6,100 people, the operation has consistently raised the benchmark for airport retailing and it continues to grow.
In addition to the retail division, Dubai Duty Free operates a Leisure Division which includes The Irish Village, located in Garhoud, Riverland Dubai and Studio One Hotel, The Century Village, the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium, home to the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships and The Jumeirah Creekside Hotel.
Currently operating some 40,000 sqm of retail space at Dubai International and Al Maktoum International Airports, the operation has received over 700 awards over the years including the Frontier Award for ‘Airport Retailer of the Year in Single Location’, which was won by the retailer for a record ninth time in 2018.
